Indonesia National Gallery

Museum and Art Gallery in Jakarta

The Indonesia National Gallery is a prominent landmark on sightseeing tours of Jakarta’s city centre. It is conveniently located right next to another of Jakarta’s iconic landmarks, the National Monument or Monas. The gallery serves as a great place to cool off from the heat of the day and get culturally in-tune with the art of Indonesia. There are several spacious halls filled with well over a thousand art pieces by great names in Indonesia’s art scene. Entrance to Indonesia National Gallery is free.

Notable classical artists such as the late Raden Saleh with his vivid Indonesian countryside landscape paintings, and Bali’s legendary Nyoman Lempad who immortalized old Balinese village culture and dances through his sketches, are among the highlights in permanent exhibits. Meanwhile, dozens of contemporary sculptures and installations by young artists of late are also on permanent display.

There are also painting and installation works by foreign artists, such as Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, German-French abstract artist Hans Hartung, and the Hungarian-French optical art maestro Victor Vasarely. You will easily find yourself fixated upon a vivid work, if not walking through galleries full of colourful and abstract geometrics.

Also onsite are a library filled with art-related books and a special laboratory fitted with polychromatic and UV lamps, glass screens for analysing paintings and scriptures, and a climate controlled room. It is where meticulous restorations are done on significant paintings and art pieces.

Temporary exhibits are regularly held in its three expansive art halls, while different schedules are announced monthly, therefore, your second trip to the non-permanent exhibits will never be the same here. The gallery regularly organises creative arts and painting workshops, inviting art school students and the general public.
