Ancol Art Market in Jakarta

Unique Open-Air Art Market in North Jakarta

The Ancol Art Market, located within the massive Ancol Dreamland entertainment complex in North Jakarta, offers you a cool break from the adrenaline rush of the park’s thrill rides and water sports. It invites you to a pleasantly forested walking area with a purpose-built market that is lined with a number of individual pavilions. Each showcases different kinds of art and handicraft items and is manned by local painters and craftsmen who produce items on a day-to-day basis.

On your leisurely strolls through the Ancol Art Market, you can take a peek into each pavilion for an idea of what they have to offer. Painters, puppet craftsmen, woodcarvers and sculptors are busy within each of these wooden houses, creating new pieces or adding their finishing touches with paintbrushes and chisels. You can make a deal directly and take home an intricate piece of batik, a carved wooden panel, or ask to have your own portrait painted on the spot by the highly skilled artists. Shaded

Since its opening in the early ‘80s, the art market has well over a hundred individual stalls, and is definitely one of the go-to places in Jakarta for avid collectors. One can also witness rare techniques being applied, such as heritage Javanese batik painting by hand and double ‘ikat’ weaving from the Nusa Tenggara Islands. There is a variety of traditional jewellery and ornaments, with several pavilions specialising in gemstones, pearls and even seashells.

Starting prices vary, from a low IDR 50,000 to well over IDR 2 million. There’s an open arena in the middle of the art market, where you can watch regular art performances and exhibitions. Some evenings have a Night Art Market programme, with a roster of live bands and local dance troupes performing onstage as well as traditional ‘wayang’ puppet shows and contemporary dances. Bazaars are another highlight, with chefs and a variety of merchants showcasing their ware through culinary festivals. The market is well alive from morning until night.
