Lombok is an island that attracts the adventurous. The diving and trekking opportunities are certainly not to be missed. Exploration is at the core of the island experience, and as it is covered in virginal forest and fertile plains, the landscape is one of epic and untouched beauty. Fringed by the deep-blue waters of the Indonesian Ocean, divers come from around the globe to enjoy the extensive marine life which inhabits the ocean.

Another major pull of Lombok is the surf. Like Bali, it attracts a huge number of surf enthusiasts eager to catch some waves and kick back in a relaxed setting. Golf is also a popular pastime, as Lombok is blessed with sprawling greens and soothing sea breezes, Lombok is the perfect environment for a few rounds.

Cycling in Lombok Island

Although Lombok has a predominantly mountainous terrain, there are some areas that are flat and perfect for cycling. Various bicycle paths lace the island, providing visitors with the perfect excuse to take off and discover their surroundings. Explore the cascading waterfalls and soaring mountains; cycling is often described as the best way to unravel the beauty and hidden pleasures of an island. The beauty of cycling is that you don’t necessarily have to seek professional assistance; bikes can be rented from numerous places around the island. Once obtained you are free to go and explore at your own pace – a great way to get to know such an interesting landscape and culture.

Popular places to visit include Sumba, a traditional Lombak village which highlights the alluring simplicity of rural living. The epic rainforest and the array of wildlife it plays home to, is pretty awe inspiring for most. Various temples, waterfalls and remote villages are waiting to be discovered here, and taking off on a bike is arguably the best way to do it.

Horseback riding in Lombok Island

Taking to a horse and riding around remote areas such as Benang Stokel Waterfall, Aik Berik Village or the tranquil coffee fields and rice plantations, is the most natural way to gain insight into Lombak's grass roots, and intrinsic culture. Treks include refreshments; water, protective clothing and a guide.

Mountain trekking in Lombok Island

One of the most popular pastimes on Lombok is hiking. Blessed with a stunning landscape, the fertile lowlands are home to an abundance of vegetation, coffee, tobacco, cinnamon and rice, while the highlands are clad with forests. There are several good treks around the island, including multi-day hikes up the mountain (3,000 metres high) and around the crater.

If you prefer, there are shorter treks to waterfalls and other island attractions. The Mount Rijani trek is the most famous but is difficult to complete.

It begins from Senaru, takes between three to four days to complete and is considered one of the most challenging treks in East Asia.

Scuba Diving in Lombok Island

Lombok is a great place for diving, renowned globally for having over 35,000 aquatic species of underwater life; both novice and confident divers can enjoy the underwater activity here. Between Bali and Lombok flows the ‘Indonesian Through Flow’ (Arus Lintas Indonesia). This is the current that passes from the Pacific to the Indonesian Ocean, and it is laden with tropical marine life and this is why people travel from all over the globe to experience the magic first hand here.

The majority of diving is around the Gili islands on day excursions. Sanggigi Beach is also a popular dive site; extensive marine life, great beaches and facilities make it a destination of choice for dive tourists. The Southwest of the island is less celebrated and offers more challenging diving.

The 'Magnet' is the main reason why most divers come here, mostly because there is a good chance to see hammerhead sharks. This is a large rocky pinnacle jutting up from about 50m below. It lies in the open sea and is 20 to 30 minutes away by boat. Large waves crash over the top of the rock and the resulting surge can be felt even at 20 metres down!

You can only dive safely below 15m because of the surge and all safety stops are made away from the rock – most definitely for the more experienced diver. Those with less experience can take lessons from the numerous instructors and dive schools on the island.

There's lots of fun to be had on and off land in Lombok. The sparkling azure shores of the Indonesian Ocean are perfect to catch some waves, to observe the colourful marine life or to learn a new water sport. Days lounging on the beach can be counteracted by the allure of aquatic adventures.

As for diving, the Gili islands are a favoured spot for water-related activities due to the slower currents surrounding them. Here, you'll be enthralled by turtles, white-tip reef sharks, cuttlefish, moray eels, angel fish and ghost pipefish.
